Language Professionals provides conference interpreting services at the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit 2018 in Sydney
Following a request for tender in September 2017, Language Professionals was officially selected by the Australian Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet as the provider of simultaneous interpretation services to support the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit in Sydney which will be held between 16-18 March 2018.
Language Professionals’ Max Doerfler in collaboration with conference services manager Bertold Schmitt was entrusted to manage the recruitment of 15 highly trained and experienced conference interpreters (Filipino/Tagalog, Bahasa Indonesia, Khmer, Lao, Thai and Vietnamese) for this high-profile event. Their work incorporates project management and delivery of coordinated and integrated activities required to conduct simultaneous interpretation services, including the management of logistics and coordination of the interpreters at meetings for the summit, travel and rostering, assistance in planning and programming simultaneous interpretation activities for the summit where 11 state leaders converge to discuss ties and cooperation.
On 17-18 March 2018, the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon. Malcolm Turnbull MP, will welcome the Leaders of the Member States of ASEAN and the Secretary-General of ASEAN to the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit. This will be the first time Australia has hosted a Summit with ASEAN Leaders in Australia. The summit is a historic and unprecedented opportunity to strengthen Australia’s strategic partnership with ASEAN and deliver tangible economic and security benefits to Australia.
About ASEAN and Australia
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is an inter-governmental arrangement formed in 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand to promote political, economic and social cooperation and regional stability. Brunei joined in 1984 and Vietnam in 1995. Laos and Myanmar became members in 1997 as ASEAN marked its 30th anniversary, with Cambodia becoming ASEAN’s tenth member in 1999. ASEAN’s activities are coordinated by the ASEAN Secretariat based in Jakarta.
As a group, ASEAN is Australia’s third largest trading partner. This summit provides an important forum to discuss how we can continue to make our region safer and more prosperous.
The centrepiece of the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit will be the Leaders’ Summit and Retreat. There will also be two major side-events: A Business Summit which will bring together leaders of industry and Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) to unlock new opportunities for job-creation, investment and enterprise; and a Counter-Terrorism Conference that will underscore our global leadership and collective regional action to combat terrorism.

The selection of Language Professionals for the management of simultaneous interpretation services at the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit marks another milestone in its longstanding record as a trusted language services provider for various high level meetings including the G20 Heads of State summit in Brisbane in 2014 and the 2007 APEC Summit in Sydney.
